When you see an increase in the traffic on the road, more congestion and a higher number of people being pulled over it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. From our driver’s seat perspective we see all the changes that come as the holidays roll in. Unfortunately for drivers, many of these changes aren’t good.
Holiday Season Motor Vehicle Statistics
Below is a list of eye-opening stats every driver should be aware of during the holidays.
- Of the 3,399 total motor vehicle deaths in Texas during 2012, 72 fatalities happened during the Christmas and New Years Eve/New Years holidays.
- In 2012, 32.3% of motor vehicle fatalities involved a driver that was driving under the influence of alcohol.
- December 31st is one of the most dangerous days of the year with 14 fatalities and 281 serious injuries in 2012.
- Austin had the third most DUI-related crashes in 2012, only San Antonio and Houston were higher.
- The Research and Innovative Technology Administration found that during Christmas people drive longer distances, an average of 275 miles in 2008, increasing their chances of getting in an accident as opposed to other holidays where travel distances are much shorter.
- The National Center for Statistics and Analysis found that driving fatality rates tend to skew higher than during non-holiday periods and alcohol was a major contributing factor. In the last two weeks of December during 2002-2006 almost 4 of 10 fatal crashes involving drivers between 21-24 years old were alcohol-related.
- In 2009 Forbes found that Christmas was the 5th most dangerous holiday of the year.
Protecting Yourself on the Road This Holiday Season
Even though statistically the holiday season is dicey for drivers there are ways you can better protect yourself while traveling.
Designated Driver – Given the predominance of alcohol involved in holiday accidents the safest thing you can do is have a designated driver. This could be a sober friend, cab or hired transportation service. If you’re planning on celebrating it’s best to just leave the car at home.
Drive Defensively – Taking a defensive driving position can mean the difference between evading an accident and being stuck right in the middle of one. Scan ahead for potential problems before they happen and stay alert at all times. Don’t forget to eye the sides of the highway where animals are waiting to play road roulette.
Update Your Eyewear – Many holiday accidents are attributed to poor eyesight and eyewear that isn’t the proper prescription. The dark is one of the biggest problems for people with poor eyesight and during December there is less sunlight per day than any other month. Be especially careful on December 21st, the day with the least amount of sunlight in the year.
