Springtime in Austin was meant to be lived outdoors. The short cold stint is long passed and the scorching summer heat hasn’t yet taken hold. It’s a glorious window of ideal weather, and there’s no better place to enjoy it than Lady Bird Lake.
If you’re reserving a limo in Austin for a special date or, dare we say it, popping the big question, Lady Bird Lake is the perfect place to stop along the way.
Spots to Hit Around Lady Bird Lake
Imagine if you will, picking a significant other or loved one up in a stretch limousine then whisking them away for a quaint picnic on the lake, or maybe a leisurely walk along the well-known Town Lake Trail before dinner and drinks downtown. Sounds divinely serene, no?
Despite the panoramic views of the cityscape, it’s hard to believe this wonder of nature is situated right in the middle of downtown Austin. Lady Bird Lake is one of the most active areas of the city with plenty to do and see on the water or on the 7.2 mile trail surrounding it.
Taking to the Water
Along the lake line you’ll find numerous places to rent just about every type of un-motorized watercraft imaginable: canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, water bikes, even giant swan pedal boats.
If you’d rather not provide the manpower you can opt to take a cruise instead. Businesses like Capital Cruises and Lone Star Riverboats, both located on the south side of the lake under the 1st Street bridge, offer lunch cruises, dinner cruises and sightseeing tours. Those that want an up close look at the world-famous Congress bridge bats – the largest urban bat colony in the world – can hop aboard a bat cruise most evenings from Spring to Fall. On weekends it’s best to reserve a spot well in advance as these cruises are quite popular.
Places to Picnic
Basically any spot just off the trail makes for a great place to spread out a blanket and enjoy an old-fashioned picnic. But if you want a more unique picnic experience, there are a few square docks tucked away on the north side of the Lady Bird Lake just to the east of the Congress bridge that afford a little more privacy and amazing views. It will also give you a nice flat surface that will keep your wine glasses upright and ants away from the food.
Get the Best Seat in the House
If you’re looking for a view Lady Bird Lake will not disappoint. Just about anywhere on the trail will give you something nice to look at, but we’re going to let you in on the best spot. Where Lady Bird Lake and Barton Springs converge there’s a waypoint called ‘Lou Neff Point’ around the 1¼ mile marker. There you will find a beautiful gazebo, viewing platform and bench that looks out across the water to downtown Austin. We’re not sure who Lou Neff is, but whatever he did to get this gorgeous spot named after him it must have been good.
Adding a little outdoor time to a date is unexpected in a good way. We’ve given you a few afternoon sunset ideas but the possibilities are endless. Don’t be afraid to make it the last stop of the night before heading home or make a whole day of it out at Lady Bird Lake.
