Everyone knows Austin is the live music capital of the world. But locals will quickly learn that it’s also one of the most movie-friendly cities there is – especially in the summer. During the steamy months, once the sun sets, movie screens pop up all around town offering free entertainment for all.
101x Summer Cinema at Central Market
During the summer months Central Market on North Lamar turns its park into the Summer Cinema showroom. With the help of the Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow five free movies can be enjoyed starting June 12th with Can’t Hardly Wait, a teeny bopper film featuring major talent.
Central Market turns the projector over to the public for the last two showings. You can vote on which 90’s movie you’d like added to the lineup at the 101x website.
Alamo Drafthouse Free Kid’s Club
Throughout the year the Alamo Drafthouse hosts the Free Kid’s Club on the last Saturday of the month, but in the summer they turn it up to eleven. The Alamo Village and Alamo South Lamar open their doors for the Free Kid’s Summer Camp every Monday and Thursday.
The classics screened for the Kid’s Summer Camp are fun for even the oldest family members – who may have seen the movies in theaters during their original runs. From 50’s Sci-Fi to insta-classic animation you and your kids will look forward to the start of the week.
Movies in the Park
Yet another free summer movie series made possible by Alamo Drafthouse, Movies in the Park has been a summer staple in Austin for years. With the help of the Austin Parks Foundation, the Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow turns the wide-open spaces of Republic Square Park into a natural movie theater.
Once a month pack up a picnic, grab your dogs and head to the park for the free show. Next up this month is Scott Pilgrim vs. the World on Thursday June 6th at 8:30pm sharp.
Deep Eddy Splash Movies
Every summer in June and July the city’s favorite swimming hole turns into an outdoor theatre. You’ll still have to pay a small entry fee like any other day, but the viewing pleasure is a free bonus. Screenings happen once a week at dusk so grab a float or pull up a blanket for one of the most unique movie-going experiences ever.
Free Movies in the Burbs
If that isn’t enough free cinema fun for you head just out of town to get a little more. Round Rock, Kyle and Leander all host their own Movies in the Park. The Brushy Creek MUD in Round Rock also puts on “dive in” movies at different pools during the summer.
Get your picnic basket ready because the projectors are already going up. Whether you live in Austin or just outside of it there’s plenty of free movie magic to enjoy all summer long.
