In the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of the Mexican heritage and culture throughout the country, despite its original purpose of commemorating the day the Mexican Army defeated the French at the Battle of Puebla. Texas is high on the list for places that go all out when Cinco de Mayo rolls around, and there’s no better place to celebrate the holiday than Austin.
Let’s check out what will be happening in the capital city on May 5th, and the places you definitely want to hit if you and a few friends are using a black car rental service to safely get around.
La Condesa Cinco de Mayo Block Party on Second Street
Nearly four years ago the La Condesa Cinco de Mayo block party started and this year’s party promises to be bigger than ever. Hundreds with gather together at the 400 block of W. 2nd Street to celebrate everything Tex-Mex.
Don’t worry about getting around on foot once you get there – the streets are blocked off so pedestrian partiers can move about safely from shop to shop, cerveza in hand. You can order beers, margaritas and food from the local bars as well as street vendors.
Cinco de Mayo at Fiesta Gardens
The Cinco de Mayo at Fiesta Gardens celebration brings the community together for a day of family fun. This year the event will be all weekend long starting Saturday May 4th. There will be a full lineup of music, food and plenty of activities to keep you entertained.
The event is being orchestrated by Fiestas Patrias of Austin. Proceeds from the Cinco de Mayo at Fiesta Gardens event will go towards their scholarship and community projects. So have fun while you help a valuable organization.
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Artwork
There are two great Austin art museums dedicated to promoting the work of Mexican artists – the Mexic-Arte Museum and the Mexican American Cultural Center. The great news is both are close to the rest of the Cinco de Mayo action. The Mexic –Arte Museum at 419 Congress Avenue isn’t far down the road from the La Condesa block party. The Mexican American Cultural Center is right around the corner from Fiesta Gardens at 600 River Street.
There’s plenty to see, do and experience in Austin this Cinco de Mayo, so get out there and celebrate.
