In Austin the best way to deal with sweltering temps is with some seriously cool music events. If you’re new to Austin it’s a great way to see why Austinites love their outdoor spaces, even during the summer. Even better, most events around town are free for everyone.
Here are three of the best music events happening throughout the summer.
Blues on the Green
When: Every other Wednesday in the summer starting at 7:30pm
Where: Zilker Park Rock Island
2100 Barton Springs Rd.
Austin, TX 78746
What: Now in its 23rd season, Blues on the Green is a free concert series that features some of the best blues and rock singers in Texas. It gets packed so if you want a front row seat you’ll have to get there early. Park rules apply, but feel free to spread out a blanket, bring a picnic and enjoy the tunes.
Symphonies in the Park
When: Sunday evenings at 7:30pm from June 2nd – August 25th
Where: Hartman Concert Park at the Long Center
701 W Riverside Dr.
Austin, TX
What: Each week a different section of the Austin Symphony will put on a showcase that even the kids will love getting down to on the light up dance floor. During the concerts people enjoy sitting on the small hillside, taking in everything from classic to well-performed pop music and enjoying a spectacular view of downtown Austin. Bonus – free parking is available at the One Texas Center.
Zilker Park Hillside Theatre
When: Thursday-Sunday at 8:30pm July 12 – August 17
Where: Beverly S. Sheffield Hillside Theatre in Zilker Park
What: Zilker Theater Productions has been entertaining Austinites with a summer musical theater show for more than 50 years now. It’s conveniently located right next to Barton Springs Pool so after cooling off with a daytime dip you can head over for an evening show. This year’s family friendly production is Little Shop of Horrors.
The summer season really shows that Austin earns its title as ‘Live Music Capital of the World’. So start breaking out the ice chests and gearing up for another tunes-filled few months.
