We’re sure you’re holiday dance card is filling up fast, but don’t let your date nights slip because of a busy social schedule. The holiday season offers a variety of once-a-year date opportunities to take your someone special to whether they are a theatergoer, athlete, avid shopper or just love enjoying the Christmas spirit.
The Nutcracker Ballet
The Austin Symphony and Austin Ballet team up to put on a spectacular showcase of theatrical talent with their production of The Nutcracker. Now in it’s 51st year the 2013 Nutcracker performances will feature brand new sets and costume design. This time old holiday tradition is a fantastic date night idea for couples, girlfriends or the whole family. Take up another notch by getting the classic black car service from us!
If you decide to go to the December 7th 7:30pm show you’ll get a little extra treat – getting to see the community selected Mother Ginger character. In November the Mother Ginger Contest was held and a select few community leaders were nominated for the guest role. Everyone then got to vote for the person that they wanted to see take the stage.
Take a Walk Down the Trail of Lights
When the Trail of Lights wasn’t opened a few years ago it became apparent that this extravagant display of lights was one of the community’s most beloved holiday events. Luckily the trail is back up and running, and this year they are having a special preview party for those that want to get a look at the lights before the trail officially opens to the public.
On December 6th Covert Cadillac is hosting the party that will include musical entertainment from Marcia Ball, Whiskey Sisters, The Soul Supporters and Ray Benson. There will also be food and refreshments available from some of Austin’s finest food trailers. If you love the luminous displays but could do without the crowds this is the only way to see the Trail of Lights.
Twelve Days of Driskill
Even those with the busiest holiday schedules can find a time to enjoy one of the Twelve Days of Driskill. Parties, dances, dinners, teas and a tree lighting ceremony are all a part of the ongoing festivities. You’ll be surrounded by some of the finest holiday decorations in the city, including their impressive 16-foot tree in the Grand Lobby.
Lights of Love 5K and Family Fun Run
Got a sporty spouse or significant other? Surprise them with an entry to the 6th annual Lights of Love 5K this Friday. It’s a one-of-a-kind evening run that winds its way through the holiday lights and displays of the Mueller neighborhood. Feel Good Bonus: the race benefits the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Austin and Central Texas, which helps ill children and their families.
A Christmas Story Makes for a Classic Date Night
The ZACH Theatre is presenting the classic Christmas tale A Christmas Story Tuesday through Sunday from now until December 29th. The story goes from the silver screen to the live stage thanks to director Dave Steakley. We’re not sure where they’ll get icicles from in central Texas, but it’s sure to be an entertaining event for fans of the movie.
Barton Creek Holiday Lights and Ice Skating
Rarely do we get a chance to ice skate in Austin, but Barton Creek Spa & Resort is making it possible with the largest rink in the city. Invite a date to skate across 4,100 square feet of ice while holiday lights glisten all around and holiday music provides the perfect soundtrack. Feel Good Bonus: part of the proceeds goes to the central Texas Make a Wish Foundation.
